A man was rescued from Esja mountain yesterday after being injured by small avalanche, reports RÚV.

Although the man was a seasoned hiker, the avalanche overwhelmed him and broke his leg. Luckily a group of fellow hikers happened upon him shortly afterwards and shielded him from the elements until the emergency services arrived to carry him down the mountain.

Hiking in Iceland an be unpredictable so if you’d like to hike during your stay it’s a good idea to know your own limits (be honest), plan reasonable distances each day. Keep in mind that even though a trail may have markers, visibility can be so poor that it is not possible to see from one mark to another. Always ensure there is someone who knows where you are and your planned route.
